Signing up for Direct Deposit

Because of changes in federal policy, most people paying taxes or receiving tax refunds will need to use direct deposit instead of a paper check.

Direct deposit, also called a wire transfer or a bank transfer, is the safest and fasted way to get your tax return. Instead of sending a paper check, the government will deposit your tax refund directly into your bank account. You’ll just need to securely provide your account number and routing number, which can usually be found on the app, website, or a bank statement.

If you do not have a bank account, you can open a secure account that costs $5 per month or less. These accounts never have overdraft fees. If you have an Ohio Drivers’ License, you can open an account on your phone. If you have another form of ID or prefer to open an account in person, visit a branch near you and ask for the Bank On account.
